Biogas
Digesters
An 8-cu.m. biogas system
owned by Inocencio Cabahug of Jugan, Consolacion provides cooking fuel for
household use and provides adequate waste management for the owners
piggery.
Another example on the use of
a biogas digester is in the dairy farm in Liloan, Cebu, owned by Mr. Ciriaco
To-ong. The installation of the biogas digester solved his problem of how to
properly dispose cow manure from his dairy farm which is located in the
middle of a subdivision. Using a biogas digester created a lot of benefits.
One is that, the health of animals as well as people are no longer
threatened. Methane, which is a main component of biogas, provided them with
cooking fuel for household use. It can likewise provide energy for other
gas-operated appliances such as refrigerators, flat irons and lamps. On a
large scale, it can even provide power to run generators. The use of the
biogas system, therefore can be minimized in dairy production, processing,
and storage especially in remote barangays where electricity is scarce.
Furthermore, the digested waste from the system is 90% pathogen free and
very high in nutrients which are vital for plant growth. As opposed to open
composting, nutrients from the waste are merely broken down into simpler
forms and are not oxidized. This translates to its high value as an organic
fertilizer, soil conditioner and as a biological pesticide.
