Power
Energy in Cebu
Gearing
for the Optimum
The
state-run National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) provides the electric
power requirements of Cebu. Practically all cities and municipalities in
Cebu, except the island municipality of Pilar, are serviced with
electricity. The Visayan Electric Company (VECO) is the major electric
supplier in the province.
In 1993,
Submarine cable interconnection of Cebu to the Palimpinon geothermal
plant in Negros Oriental is set. This is part of a bigger plan to
eventually link the islands of panay, negros, cebu, Bohol, Samar and
Leyte into one Visayas grid. This will be serviced by coal, geothermal,
oil, and small hydros, while providing a large base load generating
capacity from indigenous sources like geothermal.
The
Napocor has the following expansion programs:
•
The repair of the 50-MW Naga II Diesel plant
•
An 80-MW connection from Negros’ Palimpinon Geothermal Plant
•
A 250-MW connection from Leyte’s Tongonan Geothermal Plant
•
An additional 250-MW cable connection from Leyte’s Tongonan
Geothermal Plant
