House
of Leto
Along
San Jose street at Carcar's Poblacion stands
the house where the legendary Leon
Kilat was reportedly killed. This is the Sato mansion. Now owned by
Atty. Leto Sato, it is considered as an heirloom passed from Atty.
Leto's grandparents, Vicente Jaen and Josefa Regis. This castillian-inspired
house is built of hardwood like bayong, tugas, and narra. These kinds of
wood are what the townsfolk refer to as "dili madutlan sa ngipon sa
anay." It is said to have been renovated in 1906 and it had cost
Antonia Enriquez Sato, Atty. Leto's mother, only 64,000 pesos at that
time.

Some of its posts are
reminiscent of the Greek Parthenon’s pillars. Other posts were
hardwoods enhanced with intricate carvings. The house obviously
needs sprucing. Its ceiling are full of cobwebs while its back
portion remain idle and has become a piling area for old wood. |
At present, this Sato
mansion houses the Land Transportation Office on its second storey and
its ground floor is occupied by an appliance dealer.
The
Sato family also owns an ancestral house in Luan-Luan which was
originally owned by Nicanor Enriquez and his wife, Josefa Regis. The
house, though huge and rather dilapidated, has a great deal of
sentimental value for the Satos since it has witnessed three generations
of the family line of Nicanor Enriquez, the Regises, and the Jaens. Upon
entry, the visitor steps on the dusty staircase and the spacious, shiny
wooden floor. Carved wooden decorations greet you at all the hallway,
which is so huge that the kitchen could be seen.
