Waging
Peace
It was
October when the war ended.
The war
(which lasted for over two years 1899-1901) was the Cebuano armed
resistance to the American occupation of Cebu province.
Weakened
by casualties, desertions, and the U.S. “policy of attractions”, the
local army of the Republic, under the leadership of Juan Climaco and
Arcadio Maxilom, found that it no longer had the moral and material
resources to continue waging war.
By
September 1901, negotiations were on to bring the war to an end.
Prominent in these negotiations were civilians (“peace
commissioners”) Miguel Logarta, Pedro Rodriguez, and Arsenio Climaco.
On the republican side, Juan Climaco (who surrendered on September 26,
1901) and Pantaleon del Rosario played a key role in brokering with the
Americans.
Thus, in
October of the same year, the surrender of the Cebuano revolutionary
chiefs and generals took place: Enrique Lorega (in Guadalupe, October
22), Justo Cabajar (Guadalupe, October 25), Nicolas Godinez and Angel
Libre (Dumanjug, October 29), and Francisco Rodriguez (Toledo, October
31).
