In the heyday of
Cebuano movies in the 1950s, no one shone as brightly as Gloria
Sevilla and Mat Ranillo, Jr., the “Queen and King of Visayan
Movies”.
Gloria was the
daughter of a small Cebu merchant who was “discovered” for the
silver screen in 1950, while Mat came from a prominent family in
what is now Zamboanga del Norte. Gloria, often paired with Mat,
starred in such movies as Rosas Pangdan, Paradista (The Rig
Driver), Ang Mga Anak Intawon (Pity the Children), Mapait ang
Balaod (The Law is Harsh), Ug Unya Nalinaw (Then There Was Peace),
and May Luhang Nahabilin sa Baybayon (There are Tears Left on the
Shore). Gloria and Mat became Visayan movies’ most popular “love
team.”
