Jose
“Dodong” Gullas
Son of Vicente Gullas, a
renowned educator and scholar, Jose “Dodong” Gullas upheld his
father’s legacy and also dedicated himself to education. He founded
what is now the University of the Visayas.
But another equally
important contribution of Dodong Gullas was when he revived The Freeman,
which was founded by his uncle, Paulino Gullas. Dodong Gullas was
responsible for bringing the newspaper back to life on July 18, 1965,
even with his responsibilities at UV.
In his affairs of running
the paper, Jose “Dodong” Gullas has the right stuff and courage, the
kind that stays unwavering against all odds - a trait he shares with his
distinguished mother, Josefina Rivera Gullas. He has the sense of
fairness which make him insist to his writers that they air all sides of
an issue. And certainly, Dodong Gullas has the vision, which prompted
him even as a young educator in 1965 to resurrect The Freeman.
