Gen.
Joselin Berdin Nazareno
Undoubtedly
one of Cebu’s Most Outstanding Personality.
Former AFP Chief of
Staff Joselin B. Nazareno hails from Looc, Lapu-lapu City, Cebu and a
son of Jose and Lydia Nazareno who are both educators. He spent his
elementary years at the nearby Opon Elementary School and his secondary
education at Abellana National High School. He was in his second year as
a Chemical Engineering student at the University of Southern Philippines
when he took and passed the PMA entrance examinations. Thus began
Nazareno’s call for the military life.
Right after graduating from the
Philippine Military Academy in 1966 where he ranked no. 13 in the whole
class, he was assigned in the Mindanao area, where he earned the
monicker “Pecos” of the western movies. He is a man who prefers
firing his gun in enemy territories than pushing pens and pencils in
air-conditioned offices. As such, at his request, he was retained in
Mindanao, practically spending almost all of his military life there.
Although fierce in battle, he always
tried to win enemies by friendly persuasion and good public relations.
That’s why he was liked and loved by both friends and foes alike. In
fact, MILF and MNLF leaders declared that he was the only AFP General
who can enter anytime at any of the territories without any bodyguard.
A disciplinarian, he never tolerated
human rights abuses and made sure that violators were subjected to
severe punishment. During national celebrations like Christmas and New
Year, soldiers who fire their guns were punished by him personally. He
was very kind to his soldiers - paying them with salaries on time and
giving them monetary rewards for a job well done.
Joselin Nazareno ….. undoubtedly
one of Cebu’s most outstanding personality.
