Lapu-lapu City, being the
Birthplace of Filipino Nationalism is known for its tourism activities.
From once a dying city now became the most booming city in Cebu
Province.
Honorable Mayor Ernest H.
Weigel, JR. of Lapu –lapu City is serving the city for two consecutive
terms since 1992 up to this present.
Born on May 28, 1933 at Pajo,
Lapu-lapu City, Mayor Weigel spent his elementary days at Opon Central
School and graduated at 1947. During his secondary and tertiary days, he
became well known because of his active participation of of school
activities at Cebu School of Arts and Trade. Graduated on 1963, Weigel
is a licensed Chief Marine Engineer.
Governor E. Osmena appointed
Mayor Ernest Weigel as Deputy Governor 6th District of Cebu
from 1988 to 1992. A director of Mactan- Cebu International Airport
Authority from 1990 to 1992. A former director of YMCA and former
president of JAYCEES in Lapu-lapu Chapter. As of this present, Mayor
Weigel is not only the Lapu-lapu mayor but aside from this he is a
member of Executive Committee at Mactan International Airport, Board
member of RDC, Director of MCDP, Regional Chairman of Peace and Order,
and Director of Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board, MCBMB.
For Mayor Weigel, Mactan
plays a crucial role in the province of Cebu. For him, his goals and
objectives for the city are to continue the modernization and use of the
airport as its primary economic base, to enhance the attractiveness of
the island and further maximize its potential as one of the country’s
primary tourism areas. Also to explore further the potential of the
island for further optimization of its export industries, and to promote
a more harmonious physical development of the island which allow for the
most efficient and integrated development of its limited space for
various uses.
Presently, Weigel is the
mayor of Lapu-lapu City who is well loved by the Oponganons.
